Shoppers in supermarkets are engaging in an unexpected trend by utilizing pineapples as a means to seek romantic connections

In the midst of the TikTok trend, many single people are heading to Mercadona stores. They believe they might find romance if they visit between 7pm & 8pm and place a pineapple upside down in their cart.

This social media fad in Spain has people searching for possible partners in supermarkets using pineapples. It's caused some wild scenes! In Bilbao, which is in northern Spain, police had to be called. Workers reported that a big group of eager singles crowded into a Mercadona store and "overwhelmed" it. When the police showed up, the crowd quickly broke up. Thankfully, no arrests were made.

So, here’s how it works: folks are asked to go to the wine section if they spot others with the same upside-down pineapple. If someone likes another shopper, they can gently bump their trolley against theirs – that's a hint they want to chat! If that person feels the same way, they can bump back or just strike up a conversation, as shared by Olive Press.

People caught up in this TikTok trend have even shared videos about their adventures. The news source says that other things in someone's cart can give clues about what they're after in a relationship. For instance, if you see chocolates or candy, that means they may be looking for something serious or long-term. But if it’s a legume or lettuce, it could mean they're just seeking something casual.

On its own TikTok account, Mercadona acknowledged this trend with a post showing a pineapple and saying: “The pineapple on the shelf of Mercadona waiting for you to get a date. The popularity of this trend has reached such heights that pineapples are now difficult to locate in certain retail outlets!

And guess what? Lidl is getting in on the action too! They've started their own campaign encouraging customers to meet like-minded singles using watermelons instead of pineapples. They sent out messages across Spain saying: "La hora del amor" (the hour of love). It tells shoppers looking for love to come by between 6pm and 7pm with a watermelon in their trolley as a sign they're hunting for romance.
